Susi Schalit, born in 1933 in Vienna, left her native Austria upon finishing her training as an interpreter and emigrated to Israel, where she worked as a journalist. She initiates an experiment in Arab-Israeli relations by living among the Arabs to prove to both countries that their people can coexist harmoniously. Here she relates her experiences — positive and negative — in combating suspicion on both sides. As a single woman in the male-dominated Arab world, she encounters considerable difficulty in being accepted. But strong-willed and utterly determined, she persists against all odds until her death by her own hand in Jerusalem in 1971.
