Into the Sunset: Anthology of Nineteenth-Century Austrian Prose By Richard Hacken
Into the Sunset: Anthology of Nineteenth-Century Austrian Prose By Richard Hacken
Austrian prose fiction of the nineteenth century developed in the midst of dual forces: the waxing Industrial Revolution and the waning Habsburg Empire. This anthology offers new American-English translations of diverse and characteristic works of fiction from this period. The intent is to make masterful German-language novellas and stories of Austrian Biedermeier and Realism readily accessible to English-speaking readers. Though these works are considered to be artistic creations that touch on universal human concerns, they have been selected for their engrossing readability as well. Author-specific introductions precede each work, and a general afterword discusses the literary mood of the century. Authors included are: Caroline von Pichler, Ernst von Feuchtersleben, Adalbert Sifter, Betty Paoli, Franz Grillparzer, Friedrich Halm, Leopold Kompert, Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, Karl Emil Franzos, Ada Christen, Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach, Ludwig Anzengruber, Peter Rosegger, Ferdinand von Saar.
