The novel registers historical developments on an eyewitness, day-by-day basis, tracing the Austrian Chancellor Schuschnigg's efforts to forestall Hitler's takeover, the reactions of Austrians to the Nazi threat, and the jubilation of many Austrians at all levels — many already covert Nazis — at the prospect of joining the Reich. With the growing visibility of the Nazi party in Austria, acts of anti-Semitism increased, until the only hope for survival lay in fleeing into exile.
